SEVEN-time Ballon d'Or winner, Lionel Messi has announced that this year’s World cup competition set to take place in Qatar would be the last of his career.

The 35-year-old Argentine, who has played in four world cup editions, announced that he would be playing his last world cup with the national team for the last time when they go to Qatar in November.

"This will be my last World Cup — for sure. The decision has been made," he told Argentine journalist Sebastian Vignolo.

This is not the first time that the Paris Saint-German playmaker would be announcing a retirement as he had done so in 2016 after losing in the Copa America final against Chile, but he eventually reversed his decision and has remained the captain of the team since then.

Messi himself came close to winning the FIFA world cup trophy in 2014 when he led Argentina to the final where they were beaten 1-0 by Germany after extra time through a sublime goal by Gotze.

He currently holds the record for Argentina's highest goal scorer with 90 goals in 164 games, making him the third-highest goalscorer ever in men's international football behind Cristiano Ronaldo (117) and Iran's Ali Daei (109).
