24-year-old Zambia and Brighton Albion star, Enock Mwepu has been forced to retire from football due to a heart condition as former boss Graham Potter remains upset with the decision.

Enock Mwepu, who moved to England from Red Bull Salzburg in the summer of 2021, announced his retirement after he was diagnosed with a hereditary heart condition during a trip to Zambia where he was supposed to link up with the rest of the Zambia national team.

"We are all absolutely devastated for Enock. He and his family have had a traumatic few weeks and while we are just thankful he has come through that period, he has seen such a promising career cut short at such a young age.

"As a club, we will give him all the love, help, and support we possibly can to make a full recovery, and then as he decides on the next steps in his life.” the official website of Brighton read.

Reacting to the news Chelsea boss and former Brighton manager Graham Potter expressed his sadness over the news during a Champions League press conference.

He said: "Really terrible, but thankfully, it isn't as terrible as it maybe could've been because I think he has been as lucky as he can be in the sense that he is alive and well.

"That is something we're really thankful for. But at 24 years old, to now be able to play football puts everything in perspective.

"I tried calling him today – I sent him a message – he is a fantastic person, and whatever he does, he will succeed in his life. But it's a shame we won't see him on the pitch."
