Police charge teenager for rape after having sex with 14-year-old girlfriend in Igando

A teenager, Joseph Onminyi, has been arrested and charged with statutory rape after he lured his 14-year-old lover to a popular hotel and engaged her in a sex romp at the popular DSN Hotel located in Igando, in the Igando-Ikotun LCDA of Alimosho LGA.

According to media reports, the matter got exposed when the girl’s parents started looking for her and asked where she went. She opened up and told them that she was taken to the hotel, where she had sex with Joseph.

The parents, who were unable to bear it, consequently went to the Police at Igando Division and reported that the suspect, Joseph, took the girl out of the care of her parents and raped her. He was then arrested and detained at the station for interrogation over the alleged conduct. While being interrogated, he reportedly admitted to having done so, but with her consent.

However, the Police found him culpable because the victim is still a minor and subsequently charged him before the Ogba Magistrates Court for the alleged offence, which attracts several years of imprisonment if he is tried and found guilty before the Court.

When he was arraigned, the Court did not take his plea following a motion moved by the prosecutor, DSP Kehinde Ajayi, asking the Court to refer the matter to the DPP for advice

Presiding Magistrate, E. Kubenije, ordered his remand in custody at the Correctional Centre at Kirikiri town, Lagos, pending when the DPP’s report will be ready and directed the prosecutor to duplicate the file and send it to the DPP for advice.

The matter was subsequently adjourned till January 17, 2023, for the report of the DPP to be available, which will then determine whether the matter will be transferred to the High Court or not over jurisdiction.
