Man charged to court for impregnating 16-year-old, facilitating ‘complicated’ abortion in Igando

A 39-year-old man, identified as Onyekachi Stephen, has landed in trouble for allegedly luring a 16-year-old girl into sex, impregnating, and endangering her life by inducing an abortion in order to terminate the pregnancy.

Media reports state that the incident happened at Irawo Didum Street, Igando, in the Igando-Ikotun LCDA of Alimosho LGA, where they reside. The suspect landed in trouble after taking the girl to an unknown place, where he kept her in captivity and had sex with her before she became pregnant. And in order to cover up the act, he administered a substance, which she drank and terminated the pregnancy.

However, after taking the substance, there were complications which exposed him and as well endangered the life of the victim. The girl was, thereafter, taken to an undisclosed hospital for treatment and the matter was reported to the Police at the Igando Division. The suspect was, thereafter, arrested and detained at the station for interrogation over the conduct.

After thorough interrogation, he was found culpable and charged before the Ejigbo Magistrates Court for the alleged offence. The Court, however, did not take his plea following a motion moved by the prosecutor, Inspector Lucky Ihiehie, asking the Court to refer the matter to the DPP for advice since the victim is still a minor.

Presiding Magistrate, Mrs O.A. Layinka, ordered his remand in custody at the Correctional Centre at Kirikiri town, Lagos, pending when the DPP’s report will be ready and directed the prosecutor to duplicate the file and send it to the DPP for advice.

The matter was, subsequently, adjourned till March 14, 2023, for a mention, while the DPP’s report is still being awaited, to determine if the matter will be transferred to the High Court or not over jurisdiction.
