THE Executive Chairman of the Igando-Ikotun LCDA, Comrade Akinsanya Lasisi Ayinde, has commissioned a water aid project at the Ijegun Community Primary School.

The project, commissioned on Wednesday, November 22, 2023, was in partnership with the PepsiCo Foundation to provide clean water and decent toilets for over 700 school children in Lagos State.6601

The project consisted of a 6,000-litre capacity solar-powered borehole, rehabilitated toilets, and a newly constructed inclusive, female-friendly toilet block, which will serve over 1,000 school pupils and staff of the Ijegun Community Primary School in the LCDA.

The newly constructed inclusive female-friendly toilet has three compartments shower in each toilet, and padbanks to enable girls to manage their periods while in school. The provision of these life-transforming services will improve learning and school attendance as children, especially girls, can stay in school because they have access to clean water, decent toilets, and good hygiene.6605

As part of the objective of the project is to strengthen systems and institutions, WaterAid built the capacity of community members by training over 20 female local area mechanics and establishing a Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene Committee (WASHCOM) to maintain and operate the new water facilities.

While speaking during the commissioning, Akinsanya said: “We are incredibly proud of our long-standing partnership with WaterAid and the transformative work taking place in our community to give access to the basic human right of clean, safe water.” 6604

“We are here today to commission the borehole and toilets to accelerate the development of the school in all ramifications – social and economic.

“We believe that one of the things that can accelerate developments in Igando-Ikotun is education, which is the fulcrum of all other things.”6603

He then commended the school managers and teachers for their good care and positive impact on the pupils.6602
