A former Sports Minister, Alhaji Buba Ahmed, has died on Tuesday, October 17, 2023, in Kano State.
Recall that Buba Ahmed was the Minister of Sports in 1983 under President Shehu Shagari's administration when the Nigeria U20 team, Flying Eagles, qualified for the FIFA U20 World Cup.
The team were the first Nigerian side to qualify for any FIFA-organised tournament, and for achieving that landmark feat, the Government of the day then offered all the players, who were mostly students, scholarship to study at any tertiary institution of their choice. However, the government failed to redeem the scholarship promise.
Alhaji Buba Ahmed was buried according to Muslim rites on Wednesday, October 18, 2023.
