While it appears as panic buying, some say they just want to make sure they have enough food "in case." But in case of what?

ELECTIONS: Alimosho people throng community markets to stock homes

AHEAD of tomorrow's general elections, a large number of people were cited at the Obadore, Igando, and Ikotun markets in the early hours of today, Friday, February 25, 2023, purchasing food items.

Despite the cash crunch currently being experienced throughout the country, residents were still seen at various stalls stocking up on food and household essentials.

As observed by a correspondent of Alimoshotoday, although the Obadore market was closed, a few people were spotted selling fish, tomato, pepper, and other items along the road.

The case was similar at the Igando market where market women did not turn out in their numbers as usual, but buyers were there to patronise the few available sellers.

When approached by this reporter, a woman who had just bought some food items said she was at the market to stock up her home.

When asked further if her purchase was because of the elections, she said, "I normally come to the market, but I just want to buy enough to stock up my home in case things happen in a way that would not be safe for me to leave my home until Monday.

"They are just basic items that can carry us until at least Tuesday morning. The children are not going to school, so you know they would also eat a lot, and shops may be closed in my area."

Over the years, there have been concerns about the environment's safety, especially during elections, as pockets of violence and unrest are recorded during collation and eventual declaration of results.

Though the INEC has assured that the elections will be free and fair, with security agencies assuring a safe environment, residents' fears may not be out of place.
