POLICEMEN attached to the Moshalashi Police Station in the Egbeda-Akowonjo LCDA of Alimosho LGA have arrested a 32-year-old man for allegedly defiling the seven-year-old daughter of his neighbour for over seven months.
Media reports state that the survivor’s mom would not have known that her daughter had been defiled but for the whisper of another neighbour.
The neighbour told the survivor’s mom that the perpetrator had done a similar thing to her two daughters. The vigilant neighbour was alleged to have caught the perpetrator touching the child.
It was also alleged that the perpetrator used to take underage girls into his room.
Reports further narrate that the girl's mother usually leaves her in the care of her 14-year-old brother, as she leaves home by 4 am every day. However, following a tip-off by another neighbour, she questioned her daughter who then admitted that the man used to take her into the kitchen and put his hand on her private part, with the threat to beat her if she mentions it to anyone.
It was also gathered that, sometimes, he would go to the survivor’s apartment to perpetrate this act and to distract her 14-year-old elder brother, he would send him on errands.
The Executive Director of Child Rights Foundation, Esther Ekwem, a human rights activist, who has been fighting for justice for the survivor, while encouraging parents to set aside more time for their children, noted that the seeming carelessness of parents gives room to abusers.
