Famuyiwa joins environmental sanitation exercise in Oke-Odo market

DURING Thursday’s sanitation exercise, the Executive Chairman of the Agbado Oke-Odo LCDA, Hon. David Famuyiwa, toured the Oke-Odo Market, which has been marred with unhygienic activities of traders, who have consistently violated environmental laws.

Information reaching Alimoshotoday states that the visit follows the closure and re-opening of the Oke-Odo Market by the Lagos State Ministry of Environment, which was due to indiscriminate dumping of refuse and poor hygienic practices by the traders in the market.

While addressing the market leaders, the Council Mayor expressed satisfaction with the current sanitation exercise witnessed in the market and enjoined them to maintain the tempo of cleanliness. He reiterated that anyone found breaching environmental laws would face the wrath of the law while urging them to ensure the clean condition of their environment, just as he implored motorists to adhere strictly to the rules of parking their vehicles properly to avoid unnecessary traffic in the market area.6044

Famuyiwa said his administration will continue to review the exercise to address areas that need to be improved, most especially the market roads and drainages. He further stated that the Sanitation Officers of the Council will continue to observe and ensure that all measures to keep the market clean and hygienic are maintained in their day-to-day activities.

The Chairman also emphasised the need to put in place waste bins by the market leaders while mandating everyone to imbibe the culture of proper disposal of refuse for pick-up by waste managers, as dumping them in inappropriate places will no longer be tolerated.6046

Some of the traders, who participated in the exercise, commended the efforts of the Chairman and his entourage and expressed enthusiasm to play their part in ensuring a cleaner Oke-Odo Market.

Council officials who accompanied the Council Mayor include the Secretary to the Local Government, Chief Akinwumi James Odeyemi, the Deputy Chief of Staff, Hon. Yinka Folarin, the HOD Environmental Services, Mrs Okeowo Olubunmi, and the Sanitation Officers of the LCDA.
