Famuyiwa re-opens Oke-Odo market

THE Executive Chairman of the Agbado Oke-Odo LCDA, Hon. David Famuyiwa has directed the re-opening of the popular Oke-Odo Market, which was shut down after violence broke out in the market on Thursday, May 2, 2024.

Information made available for publication by the SSA on Media and Publicity, Mosunmola Olabige, stated that the re-opening became inevitable after incessant pleas by the traders as most of the goods sold in the market were agricultural food items that were perishables.

The closure and the unavoidable spillovers of the market have also caused negative ripple effects of environmental hazards and nuisance to the immediate environment. Besides, the livelihoods of a lot of people depend on this market. 9442

The Chairman along with the Oke-Odo Divisional Police Officer (DPO), CSP Lekan Ogundare decided to re-open the market after a thorough evaluation of the security situation in the market.

It is, however, worthy of note to categorically state that the re-opening of the market was without prejudice to the continuing investigation by the police and other security agencies as the Council is set to unravel the remote and immediate causes of the crisis and bring the perpetrators of the mayhem to justice.

A comprehensive tour of the market was also done by the council Boss, Oke-Odo DPO, and Senior Government Officials to assess the environment and ensure cleanliness. Its subsequent satisfaction led to the directive to re-open the market after the three-day shutdown. 9438

Meanwhile, Hon. Famuyiwa has engaged market leaders and reiterated the guidelines that must be complied with once the market re-opens. Some of these include zero tolerance for sleeping in the market as the market opens daily between 6 am and 7 pm (in line with Lagos State Market Laws), all head porters and wheelbarrow pushers must be identified and duly registered, and leaders of the various ethnic groups must be ready to take responsibility for the actions and inactions of all their followers.

Other conditions set ahead of the re-opening included the closure of all betting joints, as well as a brothel that was surprisingly discovered in the market.

The Chairman and other Government officials expect that the market will return to its known tradition of peaceful co-habitation by all stakeholders that has enhanced commercial activities in the market.
