The reason for the massive deduction was due to a 32.5% withholding tax imposed on their match earnings by the Australian Tax Office. The imposition of this tax was an integral part of the hosting agreement that FIFA agreed with the Australian Government.

The Super Falcons qualified from the Group stage unbeaten, winning one and drawing two, but couldn’t get past the England women's team in the Round of 16 as they fell to a penalty shootout.
