Super Falcons beat FIFA WWC co-host, Australia.

As it stands, Super Falcons sit top of the Group B table with four points, Canada, also on four points, sits second while Australia, with three points, is placed third, and Ireland, yet to win in the tournament, is fourth as they are mathematically out of the competition.

THE Super Falcons of Nigeria got their first win of the 2023 Women's World Cup tournament in a 3-2 win against co-host, Australia earlier today.

The girls pulled an upset to win the co-host despite conceding the first goal in the 45th minute of the game as they fought till the end to achieve all three points in the Group B fixtures.

Emily Van Egmond of Australia opened the scoring in the first half of the game, but they couldn’t hold on to the lead for long as Uchenna Kanu netted an equaliser during added time of the first half.

Not settling for a draw, the Super Falcons turned it around in the second half thanks to goals from Osinachi Ohale in the 65th minute to give Nigeria the lead before Asisat Oshoala netted the third goal as she became the first Nigerian female player to score in three World Cup tournaments.

With 11 minutes added after 90 minutes of play, Australia fought back and scored a goal through a beautiful header from Alanna Kennedy. The Matildas searched for an equaliser but couldn’t get past outstanding goalkeeper, Chiamaka Nnadozie, as the game ended 3-2 in favour of the Falcons.

The Super Falcons will play against the Republic of Ireland, while Canada and Australia will battle for a spot in the round of 16 on Monday, July 31, 2023.
