FOOTBALL world and Nigerians especially mourned the tenth year anniversary of the passing away of former Super Eagles forward Rashidi Yekini yesterday.

The African football legend who represented Nigeria at the World Cup, Olympics and African Nations cup that was nicknamed ‘Nigeria goal king’, died at the age of 48 on the 4th of May 2012.

Rasidi Yekini became the first Nigerian to be crowned African Player of the Year in 1993 and also was the country first goalscorer at the FIFA World Cup competition. He holds the record as the Super Eagles’ all-time top scorer having found the net 37 times in 58 international fixtures. 

Former Nigeria and Real Madrid midfielder, Mutiu Adepoju, penned a touching tribute to the football legend.

“Baba Yekini, today marks the 10th year that you left us behind. Of course, you are no more, but your legacy will continue to reign in our hearts forever,” Adepoju tweeted.

Yekini during his football career Yekini helped the Super Eagles win the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations in Tunisia where he also topped the goal charts and was named best player of the competition.
