Osimhen, Nwabali misses out of AFCON team of tournament

The list, which was released on Wednesday, consists of three players from Nigeria, three from Ivory Coast, two from Congo, two from South Africa, and one from Equatorial Guinea.

THE Confederation of African Football, CAF, has unveiled the players who made the team of the tournament for the AFCON 2023 hosted in Ivory Coast.

The list, which was released on Wednesday, consists of three players from Nigeria, three from Ivory Coast, two from Congo, two from South Africa, and one from Equatorial Guinea.

However, Nigeria striker, Victor Osimhen and Goalkeeper, Stanley Nwabali did not make the list, while the Player of the Tournament, William Troost Ekong and Super Eagles' top scorer in the tournament, Ademola Lookman made the list.

The full list includes Goalkeeper: Ronwem Williams (South Africa); Defenders: Ola Aina (Nigeria), William Troost-Ekong (Nigeria), Chancel Mbemba (DR Congo),  Ghislain Konan (Cote d'Ivoire).

Midfielders:  Teboho Mokoena (South Africa), Jean Michael Seri (Cote d'Ivoire), and Franck Kessi ( Cote d'Ivoire).

Forwards:  Yoane Wissa (DR Congo), Emilio Nsue (Equatorial Guinea), and Ademola Lookman (Nigeria).

The tournament, which ended with Ivory Coast lifting the trophy on home soil in the finals against Nigeria, is currently referred to as the tournament for the underdogs due to shocking outcomes, which saw big African teams get eliminated earlier in the tournament.
