THE Super Eagles of Nigeria have kicked off their AFCON 2021 tournament with a well deserved victory over the Pharaohs of Egypt on Tuesday evening. Kelechi Iheanacho got the winning goal in the January 11, 2022 fixture.
Nigeria beat Egypt 1-0 after an exciting and a disciplined display.
Moses Simon brought the chaos on the left hand side of attack and made numerous terrific runs into the opponents' defense. It would be in the 30th minute that one such run made Simon find Joe Aribo who got the ball to Kelechi Iheanacho for a beautiful finish.
The Super Eagles' display counts as a direct reply to former coach Gernot Rohr who recently said of the Super Eagles:
“When you don’t have the players in fantastic clubs, playing the semi-finals or quarter-finals of the Champions League all the time, you cannot pretend to be better than Algeria or Egypt".
Nigeria currently sits at the top of Group D. The Super Eagles must now beat both Guinea-Bissau and Sudan to achieve a perfect start.
