Police arraign man for beating up wife, injuring 3-month baby in Ipaja

He dragged his wife down a storey building, and the arm of their 3-month-old child was severely dislocated while he was trying to forcefully remove the baby from her mother’s back.

AN Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, October 11, 2022, remanded 42-year-old Austin Anthony, for allegedly assaulting his wife and inflicting injury on his 3-month-old baby’s arm.

According to media reports, the defendant suspected to be a baker, who lives at 16, Ajibade St., Baruwa Ipaja in the Ayobo-Ipaja LCDA of Alimosho LGA is currently facing trial for assault, cause of grave harm, and threat to human life.

The prosecutor, ASP Raji Akeem, informed the court that the offences were carried out at the residence of the defendant on September 8, 2022.

The prosecutor also added that fight broke out between the defendant and his wife, Ifeyinwa, over the man’s failure to perform his responsibility as the head of the family.

He explained that their three-month-old child had a severe dislocation on her arm, while the defendant was trying to forcefully remove the baby from her mother’s back.

Akeem also revealed that the defendant assaulted the complainant and dragged her down a storey building.

“This caused her legs to be broken and she sustained severe injuries on her body,” he said.

Akeem also revealed that the defendant has continued to issue threats to take the life of his wife with a kitchen knife.

The prosecutor also noted that the offences were in contravention of Sections 56, 172, 245 and 246 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State, 2015.

The defendant has pleaded not guilty to the charges against him.

Mrs B. O. Osunsanmi, who is the Chief Magistrate gave the defendant bail of #500,000 with two sureties in like sum.

The prosecutor has also adjourned the matter until November 2, 2022, for mention.
