THE Lagos State Command of the National Law Drug Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has intercepted over five tons of cannabis worth about N24 million in the Ayobo area of Lagos State.

According to the Lagos NDLEA Commander, Ralph Igwenagu, during the display of the exhibit in Lagos, the substance was evacuated with 20 vans from the warehouse located at Ayobo.

He also said that officers of the Command clamped down on the syndicate on November 18 and were also able to arrest a member of the syndicate, Promise Achienu, a 47-year-old man who hails from Delta State.

Igweangu stressed that the officers of the Command were able to clamp down on the syndicate after long surveillance on its notorious members who operated between Lagos and Osun.

The apprehended member of the syndicate said he was called to move the drugs from Osun State to Lagos and that was the first time he was transporting cannabis.

He said: “They called me to carry load from Ikire, Osun State. When I got there, I discovered that it was cannabis they wanted me to carry. I had no option not to do it because I had no money to buy diesel to go back. I begged them to give me money to buy diesel, they refused and said I must carry the cannabis.

“I called the owner of the vehicle that diesel had finished and needed money to go back but he refused to send me money.

“The house in Ayobo that NDLEA raided to seize cannabis is not my house. It is the place I was directed to offload the drugs. They promised to pay me N50, 000 but they just paid me N15,000 to buy diesel. They promised to give me the balance.”
