MR IBU: Nollywood's biggest comedian

The late actor, who hailed from Nkanu West L.G.A., Enugu State, worked as a hairstylist, ventured into photography, and also worked in a company that produced crates to make ends meet.

BORN October 17, 1961, John Ikechukwu Okafor, popularly known as Mr Ibu, was considered one of Nigeria's best and most-paid comic actors in the Nollywood industry.

The late actor, who hailed from Nkanu West L.G.A., Enugu State, worked as a hairstylist, ventured into photography, and also worked in a company that produced crates to make ends meet.

He was admitted into the College of Education, Yola, but pulled out due to financial difficulties and later enrolled in the Institute of Management and Technology (IMT), Enugu as soon as he was financially able to.

The actor, who was a perfect combination with Osita Iheme aka Paw Paw, brought about a hit movie Mr Ibu and his son, which was a major hit in the movie industry as the name “Mr Ibu” stuck with him.

He acted in more than 200 Nollywood movies, including Mr Ibu (2004), Coffin Producers, Husband Suppliers, International Players, Mr Ibu in London (2004), Police Recruit (2003), 9 Wives (2005), Ibu in Prison (2006), and many other winning several awards.

The actor was announced dead on March 2, 2024, at the age of 62 at Evercare Hospital in Lekki, Lagos State, after battling illness since 2023.
