“Treat your domestic staff same way you treat your biological children”- Alimosho Chairperson

THE Chairperson of the Alimosho Local Government Area (LGA), Alhaja Kabirat Olayinka Sulaimon has advised that domestic staff be given the same privileges being enjoyed by the biological children of the household.

Alhaja Kabirat made this statement while speaking at the sensitization and enlightenment program organized by the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency in collaboration with the Alimosho LGA, Igando-Ikotun LCDA, and the Egbe -Idimu LCDA, held at the Alimosho LGA secretariat on Thursday, July 21, 2022.

She lamented the ill-treatment being meted out to domestic staff by their employers, adding that “the days of the slave trade is over, every child deserves love, protection and security; where you cannot extend same love you show to your children to your domestic staff, no need bringing them to your abode."

Speaking further, she opined that, “It is natural to scold our children in order to train them to be responsible and responsive but going to the extent of inflicting bodily injuries on them is considered domestic violence which attracts severe punishment.

“We have explained to ladies in our society to always speak out when they are being molested; sexual abuse is a criminal offence.

“No should be no, sex should be consensual, rape is a no-no in Alimosho LGA.”

On her part the Director, Ireti Resource Centre Women's Rights and Health Project (WRANP), Mrs Bose Ironsi charged men to show self-discipline even when they are tempted by the provocative clothes ladies wear these days.

According to her, “If ladies are raped because of the clothes they wear, what must have prompted a man to rape a one-year-old baby?

“Why do men rape ladies in Pudah, if not for lack of discipline and inability to control their libidos.”

The Executive Chairman of Alimosho LGA, Hon. Jelili Adewale Sulaimon, who was a special guest at the occasion, charged parents to monitor their children and ask questions.

"Try to be a friend to your children so that they can easily confide in you when they are facing sexual abuse or domestic violence.

“The perpetrators are usually close relations of the family, neighbours, friends, and co-workers,” he said.

Present at the occasion were the Chairperson Igando-Ikotun LCDA, Alhaja Hafsat Akinsanya; Vice-Chairman; Igando-Ikotun LCDA, Mrs Mojisola Ayinde Badmus; Kudirat Oredein Temitope, SSA to Igando-Ikotun LCDA on Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation; and Mrs Bukonla Bada SSA on Civic Engagement.
