HAJIA Kabirat Sulaimon, the Chairperson of the Alimosho Local Government Area has called on all stakeholders to use the occasion of this year’s International Day of the Girl Child celebration to make a case for the girl-child so that a tremendous improvement will be experienced soonest in their general wellbeing.

Mrs Sulaimon made this call in a statement she personally signed on Tuesday, October 11, 2022, and titled, “2022 International Day of Girl-child: Our time is now - Our rights, Our future.”

She said, “The International Day of Girl-child is a very important day to remember our girls, especially those that are facing all kinds of challenges in their survival in society.

"The 2022 edition with the theme, "Our time is now - Our rights, Our Future" was well coined to call the attention of our society to the need to hasten up in their plans to save the girl-child if truly we have given it the thought it requires.”

Quoting UNICEF, she said, "Girls around the world continue to face unprecedented challenges to their education, their physical, and mental wellness, and the protections needed for a life without violence. Girls with disabilities face additional barriers to accessing support and services.

“Today, we still have stories of maltreatment of a girl-child. Just a few weeks ago, I read the story of a house girl killed by her mistress for reason unknown and thrown into the bush. How on Earth can this type of barbaric activity still be existing in our society in the 21st century?

“This and many more, however, are some of the challenges that should be addressed this year in order to complement the efforts of the past. This will consequently ensure that the nearest future will bear a better fruit for the girl-child.”

Restating her commitment to the general well-being of the girl child, the Alimosho Chairperson further enjoined organised fronts including religious, ethnic, NGOs, and youth organizations to incorporate into their plans, the means to contribute to the improvements of the lives and well-being of a girl-child through their programs and activities. This will increase awareness and consequently bring better results.
