Agodo Community resident decries lack of water supply to homes

The resident said shortly after he moved into the area in 2015, the public taps stopped running, and the pipes rusted, leaving the people to resort to boreholes and deep well water which are largely unsafe for consumption.

A resident of the Agodo community in the Egbe-Idimu LCDA of Alimosho LGA, Rasheed Oluwo, has said that in his over 10 years of living in the community, there had never been a water supply to his residence despite the location of a water station in the community.

Speaking in an interview with Nigerian Tribune, he decried the inability of the state's water corporation to live up to its expectations.

He said: “It is time for the Lagos State Government to begin to concentrate on making potable and safe water available to the citizens. Water is essential, but as important as this infrastructure is, it is lacking in most homes across the state.

“When I moved into this community in 2015, the public taps were running, but about six months into my tenancy, the taps stopped running. Why? Nobody knows. And between then and now, all the pipes that connect residences have become rust. So, we are left with boreholes and deep well water which is untreated and unsafe for consumption.

“My appeal to the Lagos State Government is to prioritise the water sector and revitalise the sector because potable water is essential to healthy living.”

The situation is also the same in some areas of Surulere and Ojo. For instance, in Surulere, a resident said they have resorted to buying gallons of water at the rate of N1,000, while those who could afford it, have opted for private boreholes.

This distressing situation, which residents of Lagos have been subjected to over the years, has heightened calls for a total reform of the Lagos State Water Corporation.
