POLICE officers attached to the Dopemu Division of the Lagos State Police Command have announced the arrest of a 25-year-old man, Dauda Oni, who mounted a roadblock on the highway and forcefully extorted money from motorists.

According to media reports, when apprehended, Oni was quoted as saying that he learnt the act from the police. The incident happened at Monica Road in Mangoro, Dopemu area of Agege, where Oni, and others at large, allegedly mounted a roadblock and were forcefully extorting money from motorists.

Trouble was said to have started after a victim, Abiodun Shittu reported Oni and his gang to the police for stabbing him in the stomach and leg with a knife and also stealing his phone.

The Police then went to the scene and arrested Oni, who initially resisted and told the team to their faces that he was not afraid because they learnt the work from them.

After interrogation, the Police charged Oni before the Ogba Magistrates Court for the alleged offence, to which he pleaded not guilty.

The prosecutor, Inspector Dada Wasiu, then asked the court to give a date for a hearing since he pleaded not guilty to enable the police to prove that he actually committed the alleged offence.

The Presiding Magistrate, Mrs O.O. Fagbohun, granted him bail in the sum of #200,000 with two sureties in like sum. The matter was then adjourned for mention while he was remanded in a correctional centre pending when he will perfect his bail conditions.

Meanwhile, the Police were said to have intensified efforts to arrest his accomplices, who are still at large.
