MTN, GLO, others deactivate 72.77million telephone lines as FG enforces NIN/SIM linkage

FOLLOWING the Federal Government of Nigeria’s directive on Monday, April 4, 2022, that outgoing calls on all unlinked SIM cards in the country should be barred; the telecommunication companies, MTN Nigeria, Glo, Airtel, and 9mobile, on Tuesday, April 5, 2022, temporarily deactivated all telephone lines which Subscriber Identification Modules (SIM) are not linked to National Identity Numbers (NIN). 

The affected lines were about 72.77 million according to a joint statement signed by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) Director of Public Affairs, Dr Ikechukwu Adinde and National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) Director of Corporate Communications Mr Kayode Adegoke.

However, the statement claims that there is an open window for defaulters to link their NIN to their SIMs at designated NIMC centres nationwide.

Meanwhile, to know your NIN number dial *346#, to link your NIN with MTN number dial *785#; to link your NIN with Airtel number dial *121*1#; to link your NIN with 9mobile number dial *200*8#; and to link your NIN with GL0 number, send  “UPDATE NIN, NIN NUMBER, first name, last name”  to 109.
