LAGOS State government has finalised plans to begin operations of the newly introduced Senior Secondary School Programme in January 2022 as students return from Christmas and New Year holidays for the second term.

Lagos Commissioner for Education, Mrs. Folasade Adefisayo, made this known at a strategic stakeholders’ meeting with the public and private organisations and individuals on Tuesday, December 21, 2021. The new secondary school model will combine regular academic subjects with practical works for students in a single curriculum.

According to madam commissioner, the comprehensive schools across the six education districts of the state are basically formed to graduate students who would gain quality academic knowledge, and acquire relevant skills that would prepare them for both employment and a path to entrepreneurship.

A total of 12 schools in the six education districts of Lagos (with 30 students per school) would be selected to initiate the programme which includes the five broad subject categories: agriculture, technology, and digital skills, media and entertainment, beauty and events, building and construction.

“We will also ensure the students are well trained in financial and digital literacy, communication, entrepreneurship, and marketing and sales across subjects of study so as to be globally competitive in their areas of competencies,” Mrs. Adefisayo said.

The education commissioner explained that the state government would support this new secondary education model, and expand through relevant public and private stakeholders who would also serve as mentors and ambassadors to students on entrepreneurial paths.

It is the vision of Lagos State government to create and operate an education model that will help Nigerian pupils meet changing skills requirements for a 21st-century economy.
