World Heart Day: Doctors advise on how to maintain healthy heart

Cardiovascular disease is still the number one cause of death on the planet.
 
The annual campaign on healthy heart has been a perfect platform for the CVD community to unite and fight against CVD and reduce the global disease burden.
 
MD/CEO, ALGH, Dr. Madewa Adebajo, while appreciating members of staff for their commitment to duty and participation in the day's activity, charged all to engage in a healthy lifestyle.
 He said: "Discover what makes you happy, go for it, avoid sitting idle and take part in meaningful activities. Also ensure a lifestyle of healthy diet.
 
In an interview with AlimoshoToday, Dr. Akinbo Akindeji, a Consultant Physician Cardiologist, ALGH, stated that awareness of heartbeats (palpitation) chest pain, tiredness, productive cough, abdominal swelling among others are symptoms of a heart in crisis.
 
Dr. Akindeji explained that individual lifestyle is a risk factor for cardiovascular disease. He maintained that intake of highly-salted food, consumption of saturated fats, high intake of alcohol, smoking, hard drugs and lack of exercise are various negative lifestyles that can possibly cause heart related diseases.
 
The Consultant espoused that poorly controlled diabetes, hypertension, congenital heart disease (being born with a heart disease) are some of the common causes of heart related ailments.
Dr. Akinbo revealed that care for the heart entails a lot, which are pharmacological and non-pharmacological with an advocacy on non-pharmacological care. He said engaging in a healthy way of life, maintaining healthy weight, regular exercise, reduction in salt intake, consumption of more vegetables and fruit and in-depth happiness also promote heart health.
 
He further urged individuals with non-communicable ailments such as diabetes and hypertension to adhere strictly to hospital appointments.and keep checking on their blood pressure.
