CHECKING the Urban Dictionary, Sunday Funday is said to be the only holiday that occurs more than once a year.
In fact, it’s the only common drinking event that occurs 52 times in a 12 month period. That’s right, a holiday that happens every weekend around the world.
You see, human beings cannot get enough of holidays. If the calendar isn’t going to give as many marked days as we want, we can just mark them for ourselves. Frankly speaking, people around the world are now having Sunday Funday like it’s a designated holiday with a culture of its own —a culture of booze.
They may not know it but many men have Sunday fundays every week. You know, grabbing a couple of bottles and debating over bowls of peppersoup. Teaming up with your closest friends on a Sunday evening, on a beach, till everyone is tipsy enough to stop because of the possible consequences on Monday morning.
Sunday Funday is recognised in the United States, mostly in Michigan, as the day of the week that you become most inebriated. It is not officially recognised here in Lagos. Often times, drinking usually begins in the early afternoon with no particular number of bottles of favourite beer, then soups and meat of choice keep the mouth busy after it’s done enough talking.
Sunday Funday is even made interesting with a few rules and games. A more conscious group of friends can decide to drink a shot of rum or vodka upon the occurrence of a repeating event. So, a shot each time someone walks out of the room, or each time a goal is scored in a football match, or every time a specific word is said.
Some people involved in Sunday Funday may even move from one bar to another throughout the day becoming more and more intoxicated until early evening time. By celebrating the “Sunday Funday” you can extend your weekend festivities just a little longer before hanging up your party boots for the weekend.
However, the “Funday” is supposed to end early enough, so that you can rest assured that you will be forced to pass out in bed early enough to be perfectly refreshed for work the next morning. Here’s where we have issues. “Funday” is hardly memorable, thanks to the alcohol. Some people drink late into the night so that they will not be able to recover early enough on Monday.
Finally, there’s always irresponsible drinking and you’re guaranteed not to be sober when you get home. Strictly for singles who can handle their drink and have no kids waiting on them at home.
