WHY do human beings find it so easy to be unfaithful these days? More importantly, how do some men and women deal with the shame of infidelity? African Doll, a US-based lady, came out in an interview on Monday to say that she was impregnated by gospel singer, Sammie Okposo (the well-known minister who is a married man), and he had asked her to get an abortion.
Many reactions followed this revelation. The more prominent and immediate response came from Sammie himself. The gospel singer quickly put up a public post on his social media to apologise to everyone who has ever known him, including his wife.
Some people have complained about both parties. One group condemns the act of infidelity while another said we should not judge them for their sin since we all sin in different ways. In the middle of the heated media debates on who and what is right, someone else went on Twitter to claim that Sammie is not even a one-time offender. This person claimed that Sammie Okposo was well known for his promiscuity within the church and many churches had to ask him to vacate his position of song ministration in their choirs.
African Doll complained that Sammie Okposo told her to get an abortion, but she did not want to; she wanted to keep the child. Clearly, our gospel ministry wanted to tie loose ends by getting rid of the pregnancy. He wanted to keep things under wraps until she went public and he was forced to tender that unnecessarily public apology.
The public apology is unnecessary, for one, because many of his colleagues have complained about his randy propensities and his serial adulterous adventuring. I just wonder, if African Doll did not get pregnant and go public with the affair at this time, would he have come out to apologise to his wife and "friends"? You see, Sammie Okposo's track record of infidelity was well kept by even his backup singers and friends. There's no guarantee he won't do this again, even after his "restoration".
The public apology on Instagram is one of the steps in the process of damage control. Sammie first apologises to everyone of us, then he goes quiet for a while (hopefully in prayer and repentance), then he returns to the stage saved again. Now, there's nothing wrong with backsliding and falling in and out of temptation, but many people are now skeptical about his feelings and apology.
Can a man who had to wait for his side chick to cast him out in the open before he was willing to tender a public apology be trusted, even by his wife? This is why infidelity is a can of foul substance waiting to be opened for the public to perceive and remember for a lifetime. His dirt is now out in the open after years of concealment. Even if he goes to repentance, the stigma will remain and the doubts will linger.
