ORDER was replaced by chaos yesterday afternoon on Command Road, Meiran, Lagos State, as a clash between men of the state police command and tricycle operators in the area left no fewer than three persons dead.

Trouble started when a certain traffic warden allegedly stabbed a tricycle operator named Eleyele to death for refusing his demand for 100 naira.

Angered by this, the victim’s colleagues ran after the policeman who fled the scene immediately.

After the police officer escaped, the protesting crowd took Eleyele's remains to the front of the Meiran Police Division and deposited it there.

The angry mob reportedly attempted to set the police station ablaze, but the policemen dispersed them with bullets and teargas canisters.

Eyewitnesses have said that a tricyclist had been similarly killed by the Police a few months ago. Among the victims of yesterday's violence was a roadside vulcaniser who was hit by a stray bullet --a blind woman's son, he was only 17 years old.
