Wilfred Ndidi out of AFCON squad due to Injury

26-year-old Super Eagles midfielder, Wilfred Ndidi will not be taking part in the 2023 AFCON tournament after sustaining an injury during a club fixture.

The talented midfielder sustained an injury before Leicester City’s 4-1 win against Huddersfield Town on New Year’s Day and has now been replaced by Alhassan Yusuf in the national squad.

Alhassan Yusuf, who plays for Royal Antwerp of Belgium and was originally named in the Super Eagles’ 41-man provisional squad for the competition, is expected to join the rest of the squad in the United Arab Emirates.

Meanwhile, Ndidi's clubmate, Kelechi Iheanacho, is also nursing a muscle injury but is expected to be ready to join the Super Eagles camp before the start of the AFCON.

The Super Eagles will begin their campaign against Equatorial Guinea on January 14 before playing host, Ivory Coast four days later, and then conclude the Group stage games against Guinea Bissau on January 22, 2024.
