Efonalaye residents agonise over persistent blackout, heavy bills

RESIDENTS of Efonalaye Street in Shasha Oguntade area of Alimosho Local Government Area of Lagos State have cried out in agony over the persistent blackout in their community despite the erection of new electric poles there.

When AlimoshoToday interacted with the residents last week, they lamented the epileptic nature of electricity supply in their area despite receiving heavy monthly bills.

Mr Michael, a welder who works and lives on Efonalaye Street said: "To be sincere, the power supply has really been terrible. In fact, the street lights erected are powered by a generator."

He observed that if the government could power street lights with a generator, then it is an indicator that electric power supply should not be expected at all.

Mr Micheal, however, appealed to the government to come to their aid after showing appreciation over the ongoing road construction.

The Chairman of the Efonalaye Landlords Association, Mr Ayanbisi Gabriel said: "Residents pay for darkness and the bills are often exorbitant."

When asked if they have ever received any power supply in the last two months, he said: "It's only once in a blue moon, on the days they are pleased to".

Mr Gabriel said the residents unanimously agreed with the electricity company if they could possibly choose to rotate the power supply because of other streets using the same transformer, but there has been no difference at all.

According to the Efonalaye Chairman, the agreement was that the street would be on for electricity supply for three days and off for a day. However, they've been on blackout all days even after the meeting.

Mr Gabriel appealed to the government to intervene as businesses have folded up in the area due to lack of power supply. He complained that bills are sent continuously despite the "uninterrupted" blackout.
