OPINIONS on COVID-19 being contracted by only lower class individuals has been faulted after 7 times Ballon d'Or winner Lionel Messi tested positive to the virus during the Christmas period.

The former Barcelona captain had contracted the infection while on vacation in his native country, Argentina, during the Christmas holiday and self-isolated there.

Messi was expected to have returned to training earlier this week but was delayed as the PSG tailsman revealed the recovery process took longer than he expected.

"As you know, I had COVID and wanted to thank you all for the messages I received, I wanted to tell you that it took longer than I thought it would to be well again, but I'm almost fully recovered and I'm looking forward to getting back on the pitch.I've been training in the past few days to reach 100 percent. There are big challenges this year and I hope we can all see each other again soon. Thanks to you all!" Messi said on Instagram.

PSG is unlikely to field him in their battle against Brest on Saturday, January 15, 2022, and it is unknown the possible return date of the Argentine.
