CONMEBOL, the organisation governing South American football, has honoured 2022 World Cup winner, Lionel Messi with a statue at the official museum of South American football.

The multiple Ballon d'Or winner, who netted his 800th goal recently, was immortalised in the official museum of South American football, alongside fellow legends Diego Maradona and Pele, who also won the World Cup during their football days.

“I had never dreamed or thought about this. My dream was to enjoy what I liked when I was little, to be a professional soccer player, to do what I always loved in this life.

"I had a very long road, many decisions and defeats, but I always looked ahead and wanted to go for a triumph, for a victory.

"I think that is the most important thing, to fight for your dreams, that everything is possible, and to enjoy the game, which is the most beautiful thing there is,” Messi said during the unveiling.

The Paris Saint-German player is now one goal short of a centurion with the Argentina team and could hit the 100th mark when they play Curacao today.

The player will return to Paris Saint-German after the game to complete his season, and then decide whether to remain in the French capital or move elsewhere.
