HUNGER OR GREED: Couple arraigned for breaking into houses to steal in Abesan Estate

The husband and wife first broke into a house to steal a container of jewellery worth #215,000 before breaking into another person's house to steal a cash sum of #1.5 million and jewellery worth #500,000.

A couple, Cordelia Dike and Frank Dike, who allegedly broke into a residential house at Abesan Housing Estate, in the Ayobo-Ipaja LCDA of Alimosho LGA and stole jewellery and cash worth #2.2 million, were on Tuesday, February 21, 2023, arraigned before the Ejigbo Magistrate’s Court in Lagos. 

According to media reports, the defendants, whose address was not provided, are standing trial on a three-count charge bordering on burglary and theft, to which they pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The prosecutor, Benedict Aigbokhan, told the court that the husband, 63, and the wife, 50, broke into the house of one Doyin Ogunbiade on February 1, 2023,  and stole a container containing jewellery worth #215,000.

He said the defendants also broke into the house of another person, Adewunmi Dada, and stole a cash sum of #1.5million and jewellery worth #500,000.

According to the prosecutor, all stolen items were valued at #2.2 million.

He said the offences contravened sections 287, 307, and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

The Magistrate, K. A. Ariyo, granted bail to the defendants in the sum of #500,000 each with two sureties each.

She ordered that the sureties must be gainfully employed and must show evidence of tax payments to the Lagos State government. She then adjourned the case until March 3, 2023, for mention.
