THE Managing Director/CEO of the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), Mr Ibrahim Odumboni, has urged residents of the Igando-Ikotun LCDA to embrace the culture of waste sorting in order to reduce pressure on landfills around the state.

This plea was made by Mr Odumboni at a meeting, on Thursday, June 9, 2022, with the solid waste management stakeholders in Igando-Ikotun LCDA at the council’s secretariat hall, comprising market leaders, artisans, and representatives of CDAs/CDCs, where he enjoined them to look inwards for local solutions to tackle waste management challenges, including active engagement of youth for waste policing in the area.1454

While speaking at the meeting, the Executive Vice-Chairman, Hon. Mojisola Ayinke Badmus, who represented the council Chairman, commended LAWMA for their efforts at achieving a clean city, promising that the council would play their part in achieving a sustainable environment.

“If there is any state in Nigeria that has raised public awareness about waste disposal and environmental sanitation, it is Lagos State. Since 2008 when the Fashola administration assumed power in the state, waste disposal posed a major challenge for the government.1457

“Though the tempo has varied from one administration to the other, the undying consciousness that solid waste management is a major problem that must be tackled in Lagos remains unshaken; there are no two ways about it if the city must be habitable with the teeming population. That is why no administration should allow Lagos to return to the era of filth and garbage dump,” she said.

She also suggested the setting up of a WhatsApp platform or hotline for stakeholders in the council area for the quick resolution of waste management issues.1458
