Lagos SDGs kicks off clean-up exercise in Alimosho

The Special Adviser on Sustainable Development Goals and Investment, Mrs Solape Hammond kick-starts the 'Clean Up' exercise in Alimosho Local Government on Thursday.

THE Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and Investment, Mrs Solape Hammond, kick-started the Lagos "Clean Up" exercise in Alimosho Local Government on Thursday.

Alimosho residents were sensitised on the need for a cleaner environment and proper sanitation, and they were helped to clean up their environment.

While speaking with AlimoshoToday on the Cleaner Lagos Initiative, the Senior Special Assistant on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Lekan Fatodu, said:

"The attitude of the citizens towards waste management needs to be improved.

"What we are doing from the office of the Sustainable Development Goals is to increase public awareness on the nexus between a clean environment and wellbeing, as well as helping them to take care of their waste and encouraging them to follow that similar pattern that we are taking."

In response to AlimoshoToday's question on the difference between LAWMA and the Cleaner Lagos Initiative, Lekan said:

"We are at the moment where any intervention cannot be enough. Right now, the invasion of COVID-19 in our space speaks so much about the danger that we face if we are not taking care of many rudimentary health practices, attitudes and behaviours.

"Even though there is an established agency that is in charge of waste management in the state, we understand that in the wake of COVID-19 there was the need for intra-ministerial collaboration towards fighting the danger of the pandemic.

"We now understand equally that the negative role being played by poor waste management and poor attitude to sanitation requires similar concerted effort towards reducing attitude around indiscriminate waste management in the state."

Present at the scene was also the Executive Chairman of Alimosho Local Government, Hon Jelili Sulaimon.
