Idimu Tuntun residents accuse fish pond owner of discharging wastewater on street

LANDLORDS and residents of the Idimu Tuntun community, in the Egbe-Idimu LCDA of Alimosho LGA, have accused a fish pond owner, Jeje Agoro, of polluting the environment by discharging his pond's wastewater on the street.

According to media reports, the matter was reported to sanitary officers at the Egbe-Idimu Local Council Development Area, but nothing was done to change the situation.

Residents said that Agoro, who lived on Malad Street, was called by the landlords’ association to find an alternative channel to drain his wastewater, but he called their bluff.

The Chairman of the Idimu Tuntun Phase II Community Development Association, Sanusi Ramon, said the issue had been going on for over eight months.

In his words; “We have appealed to him through elders and other prominent members of our community but he has not stopped polluting our environment. Everywhere smells of rotten flesh and flies are just milling around this area because of his discharged water.

“In fact, at a time, he told us he would stop but late at night, we discovered that he still discharged his wastewater on the street. We have no power to stop him; we are begging the authorities to come to our aid so that we can have a healthy community.”

A landlord in the area, Johnson Orogun, said the fish farmer once promised to use pipes to channel his wastewater to the drainage along the major road but he had yet to do so.

Agoro, when contacted by PUNCH Metro, denied the allegations.

He said, “As long as they have taken this step, it shows that they have not bothered to check if I have channelled the wastewater properly. I told them that I would dig a soakaway and I have just done that. What else would they have me do?

“I am counting, for the past two and half weeks now, I have not even discharged the water from my fish pond, so I don’t know where they got the water which they claimed was smelling on Malad Street; they should do their investigations properly."
