Lagos State Universal Basic Education Board (LASUBEB), in collaboration with the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), has organised a five-day capacity workshop, under the Y2017/2018 Teachers Professional Development (TPD) for Early Childhood Care Development tutors with the theme “Application of Reggio Emilia Jewel and other Approaches in Early Years Education”.

The training, which commenced on February 8, 2021, is designed to prepare teachers to effectively handle children at early stages in preparation for other classes and also to meet children’s multiple needs in the aspect of Health, Nutrition and Psycho-Social stimulation.

The Executive Chairman of the Board, Mr. Wahab Alawiye-King, represented by the Permanent Board Member in Charge of Special Projects, Mr. Adebayo Adefuye, explained that the workshop is aimed at training teachers on the best method to handle children at the first entrance into school at the early stage.

He stated that the training is in line with the third pillar of the T.H.E.M.E.S. Agenda (Education and Technology) of Mr. Governor, and will help identify the need to cover all the milestones in the development of the child and also prepare them ahead for upper classes.

The Head of Early Childhood Care Development, Special Education Unit, Mrs. Hilda Twins, noted that the key focus of the programme is to train teachers on the use of abandoned and disposable items such as disposable plates, clays and bottles for instructional materials in the classroom.

“They will be sensitised on how to come down to the level of the children in the classroom for them to be able to assimilate and also improve learning impact in the pupils”, she added.

Mrs. Twins revealed that the classroom managers will also be trained in learning corners such as the Cognitive Learning corners, Home Pretends corner, Books and Story Telling corners, saying also that they will be enlightened on how to collaborate with the parent in handling their wards.
