The Lagos State Health Service Commission on Monday commenced a structured Training and Capacity Development Programme for 2,200 of its workforce across all cadres in the 27 secondary healthcare facilities of the State, towards effective service delivery.

Speaking during the opening ceremony of the training programme at the Lagos Island Maternity Training Centre, the Permanent Secretary of the Commission, Dr Benjamin Eniayewun, informed that the stratified order of training would span three months to ensure an all-encompassing qualitative medical delivery among healthcare workers.

He said: “The training is in batches. The Management and Leadership modules are scheduled for knowledge acquisition of officers on grades 15-17, where they are acquainted with prerequisite knowledge on skills to prepare them for managerial and leadership roles. This includes training on principles of financial management in healthcare, marketing in healthcare, creativity and innovation in healthcare, as well as the development of analytical competencies to enable them manage hospital operations effectively. These will also aid conflicts management and reduce inter-cadre rivalry”.

Dr Eniayewun reiterated that all mid-career cadres on Grades Level 7-14 will be trained on modules that will positively affect their general perception which is focused on effective patient-centred care.

“The transfer of knowledge is designed to engender a service culture in the State General Hospitals towards improved patient satisfaction and outcomes. Thus, training topics under this cadre will include attitudinal change, effective communication, effective time management and patient safety, which are all schemed at increased organisational productivity. We certainly want recipients under this care to ensure a safe, efficient, effective, equitable, timely and patient-centred coordination of care”, he said.

Still speaking, the Permanent Secretary averred that the junior cadre on grade levels 1-6, will be acquainted with improved technical competencies, skills and safety in the workplace towards high capacity stress management.

While outlining the training plan, the Coordinator/Acting Director of Medical Services, Dr. Shola Pitan, disclosed that amongst the trainees, 600 personnel will be on the management level, 1200 are on the mid-career level and 400 officers are on the junior-level cadre.

He added that all participants, who are personnel of the 27 Secondary Health Facilities in the State, would be trained in batches for three-days using reading materials, interactive sessions and teamwork towards the productive initiative.
