ANONYMOUS: Who demolished Egbeda market without notice?

Egbeda market demolition

SHOP owners have lamented over the demolition of their stores at Egbeda bus stop, beside Karimu Laka Street, Egbeda. The row of shops was demolished on Wednesday, December 15, 2021, by unknown contractors.

According to information gathered by AlimoshoToday’s correspondence, the owners of the demolished shops had received no prior notice of demolition from either the local, state government, or a private firm.

Speaking with a food seller that pleaded anonymity and who also had her shop demolished, it was gathered that the shop owners were not given a prior demolition notice and they did not know who ordered the demolition.

“We were not given demolition notice; we just got to our shops this morning and saw bulldozers demolishing our shops. We don’t know who they are or who sent them,” she noted.

Meanwhile, other witnesses are of the speculations that the site may have been acquired by a building developer who did not have the liberty of informing resident shop owners of the transfer of site ownership before ordering the demolition.

It should be noted that the shop owners are deeply bittered by the development as they lament the loss of their livelihood, especially at a period very close to the Christmas holidays.

The questions these shop owners want answers to, are; who ordered the demolition? Why were they not served with a demolition notice prior to demolition? Will they be compensated for their loss of livelihood? Has the site been sold to a new owner?
