LASG shuts Katangua, Oke Afa markets

THE Lagos State Government has sealed the Katangua (Abule Egba) and Oke Afa (Isolo) markets over environmental sanitation violations.

Recall that in times past, the State Government has enforced closures in several other markets throughout the State for environmental sanitation infractions.

However, the General Manager of the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency, Dr Babatunde Ajayi, confirmed the closure of the two markets on Sunday.

Announcing the update on X, Ajayi said: “Katangua market sealed today 21st January 2024, by the monitoring and compliance team of LAWMA due to gross environmental sanitation violations.

“Oke Afa market, Isolo was sealed up due to environmental sanitation and poor waste disposal practices today 21st January 2024, by the Monitoring and Compliance Department.”

Meanwhile, commenting on the development, the State Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Mr Tokunbo Wahab, said that the Government’s zero tolerance for waste initiative, which started last year, was still on course.

Wahab warned that any market or facility engaging in reckless waste disposal would be sanctioned.
